The family business behind Untangled Work.
Untangled Work is a husband-and-wife AI training and workflow consulting business in Memphis, Tennessee, founded by Scott Gayden — raised in his dad’s Memphis sign company, twenty years in enterprise IT, and still running a small sign business of his own today. We guide small, family-run businesses to hand their repetitive paperwork to AI, in plain English, so the owner gets their evenings back.
Raised in a sign shop
I grew up in my dad’s sign company here in Memphis. I watched him quote jobs at the kitchen table, keep the books straight after dinner, and help other Memphis businesses grow — all while holding down a full-time job and raising a family. “Small business” isn’t a market segment to me. It’s home.
Today I run a small sign business of my own, making interior ADA-compliant signs — an extension of what my dad built — with the exact same juggling act: shop, day job, family. When I sit down with an owner and their stack of quoting, invoicing, and after-hours catch-up, I’m not imagining what that feels like. I did some of it last night.
Twenty years translating technology
The other half of my résumé is twenty-plus years of enterprise IT inside some of the Mid-South’s biggest employers — First Horizon Bank, Dell, International Paper, AutoZone, and today a public K-12 school district. Two decades of that work teaches you one skill above all: explaining technology to people who have a real job to do and no patience for jargon.
That mix is the whole point of Untangled Work. Big companies have had teams doing this kind of untangling for years. The businesses that actually needed it — the ones run from kitchen tables — never had anyone sit down and do it with them.
Why this business exists
The honest origin story: my wife wanted more time with me. Between the day job, the sign shop, and the paperwork both generate, my evenings belonged to a laptop. So I pointed AI at my own tangles — the quoting, the follow-ups, the after-hours catch-up — and got my evenings back.
Untangled Work exists to guide other owners to the same place. Not because AI is exciting, but because your Tuesday nights are worth more than data entry.
What we are — and what we’re not
Untangled Work is my wife and I, period. There’s no team of consultants behind a curtain, and we’re not an agency selling “AI transformation.” I’m the person who sits next to your office manager — or your spouse, or the nephew who “helps with the computer stuff” — until the thing actually works.
And the results belong to you, not us. We train on your team’s real tasks, document everything so anyone can run it, and build on your own Claude account — so every workflow stays yours if we never see each other again. Nobody gets replaced, nobody has to become a computer person, and a human approves everything before it leaves the building. You can see how that’s worked out for the businesses we’ve guided.
